when youre alone for a time, you are at first invisable to yourself. hence the feeling that no one is there. it is difficult to see onesself at first without the mirror/contrast of the other (another) person. this freaks some people out, they feel they are in a space devoid of people. but slowly, the longer one is alone, pieces of onesself become visible one by one, until you see yourself again, and are again all one (the basis for the modern english: alone).
